110 years of worship on East 19th Street

The faithful helped hail a milestone when the Flatbush Tompkins Congregational Church celebrated its 110th anniversary with a special service in Ditmas Park.

Festivities included the presentation of awards to church volunteers and a choral recitation.

Recognized as an important historical and architectural landmark, the house of worship %u2013 424 East 19th Street %u2013 boasts a neo-Georgian design and traces its roots back to a group of Congregationalists, who held their first meeting in a schoolhouse on Tompkins Avenue, near McDonough Street, on June 6, 1875.

Their efforts formed what became known as the Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church.
