During a ceremony at the Pacificana Restaurant, 813 55th Street, Assemblyman Bill Colton, together with Assemblyman Felix Ortiz and state Senator Martin Golden, congratulated neighborhood groups for raising more than $72,000 for victims of the massive May earthquake in China.
Among the groups participating in raising funds to help the victims were the United Chinese Association of Brooklyn and its president Steve Chung; the Eighth Avenue Community Improvement Association and its president Danny Chan, and its vice president, Kenny Guan; St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church along with Pastor Msgr. David Cassato, and students from Lafayette, Fort Hamilton and New Utrecht high schools.
The quake, which measured 8.0 according to the China Earthquake Administration, killed (as of July 6) 69,196 people, injured 374,176, and rendered missing 18,379, ranking it the 19th deadliest earthquake of all time.
