Armed robbery thwarted in progress

Paying attention and keeping one’s eyes open are essential to good policing and it also earned officers Sam Dorisme and Regina Meyer “Cop of the Month” awards at the recent 60th Precinct Community Council meeting.

The incident in question occurred at about 1:30 a.m., Oct. 16, when the two crime fighters were on patrol and came across an armed robbery in progress on Brighton 15th Street off Brightwater Avenue.

Dorisme and Meyer went to intervene and the pair of suspects took off. After making sure the victim was all right and getting a description of the perpetrators, the two began canvassing the area and made the collar nearby, recovering a pellet gun in the bust.

Police sources said one of the alleged robbers lived in the area and owned a condominium while the other suspect lived on Avenue J.

It is always an important bust when a crime is stopped in progress, plus it took a weapon off the street, police sources said.

Dorisme has been an NYPD member for about six years and previously worked with the street narcotics enforcement unit, while Meyer has been a patrol officer about 12 years, according to police.

The bust comes as robbery is down over 26 percent for the year in the area of Coney Island and Brighton beach. There have been 216 reported incidents thus far in 2009 as compared to 293 at this time last year.

Reported burglary is down a little more than 17 percent in the confines of the 60th precinct with 130 incidents so far this year as compared to 157 at this time in 2008.

Felony assaults and car thefts are each down about 15 percent as well.

Murder, though, is up nearly 29 percent with nine reported so far in 2009 as compared to seven at this time last year.

Most of the murders, however, were committed during a rash of violent crime in western Coney Island over the summer.

This resulted in cops flooding the area making it an impact zone and since then crime has also come down in that area.

Overall major felony crime is down nearly 15 percent in the 60th Precinct.
