Downtown Brooklyn is turning on the charm to coax back-to-school shoppers on Friday, September 4.
The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) is sponsoring the event which will include over 23 retailers along the Fulton Street mall from Adams Street to Flatbush Avenue, Court Street from Atlantic Avenue to Joralemon Street, and Schermerhorn and Livingston Streets from Court Street to Flatbush Avenue.
“We’ve gotten dozens of the retailers on the strip to participate and some are offering discounts,” said Michael Burke, DBP executive director for policy and planning. “Many of them will participate with sidewalk sales, which is putting merchandise out in front of their stores.”
Burke said to further attract businesses, the DBP in coordination with the Fulton Mall Improvement District and the Court, Livingston, Schermerhorn BID have hired musicians, clowns, face painters and balloon artists to provide street entertainment.
The musicians come from a list we’ve compiled from events we’ve done the last few years, he said.
“We’re trying to make it a very fun event to showcase all the retailers and shops we have in downtown Brooklyn,” said Burke.
Among the participating stores are Young World, Cookie’s Department Store, Pretty Girl, Bed Bath Linen, Adora Home Fashion, Modell’s Sporting Goods, ABC Super Store, Best Perfume Inc., Danice Store, Ace Fashions. Shiv Creations, Inc., Mirage Boutique, Planet Cellular, Devashi Inc., Sneaker Point, Afzal Perfume, Wireless Choice, Radio Shack, Downtown Wireless, Ameritel T-Mobile, Gourd Chips Inc. and the Renaissance Java Café.
Many Fulton Street merchants are also participating in a back-to-school initiative that runs until Sept. 14, where they are offering special discounts.
In the initiative, shoppers are being asked to print or mention the Back-to-School Shopping Pass, which can be found on ShopDowntownBrooklyn.com.
The Sept. 4 event is slated to begin at 11 a.m. and end at 6 p.m.
