Students and educators evacuated a Downtown high school for several hours this afternoon after somebody called in a bomb threat.
Two menacing calls came in to the office at George Westinghouse High School around 2:45 pm on May 5 and the voice on the line stated there was a bomb in the building and everybody had to get out, or else, said one student who claims to have spoken with the administrator who received the calls. The evacuation left students confused as to whether there was a real threat, but administrators made it clear the situation was serious, a second student said.
“Honestly, we did not know what to do at first,” said senior Ravin Harduar Singh. “But once you saw the security and administrators’ faces, you knew to get the hell out of the building.”
The clearing-out went quickly, another youngster stated.
“We dropped everything — I left my backpack in my locker and got out,” said senior Zulfiqhar Syed.
The fire department responded to the alarm, but upon determining there was a bomb threat, police took over, fire officials said.
Police canvassed inside and outside the building and, finding nothing, issued an all-clear at 4:50 pm, cops said.
An investigation is ongoing and police have made no arrests, law enforcement sources said.
