The Brooklyn Barons extended their winning streak and their domain in Suffolk, comfortably defeating Suffolk’s Bull-Moose RFC 38-12, and 29-3 bringing both their A and B sides to a 3 -0 inaugural season start.
Suffolk played hard and well, looking dangerous on the back line and successfully stealing possession from rucks frequently. They tackled hard and capitalized on a penalty and flubbed kick to march two hard-fought tries past the Barons.
The Brooklyn Barons proved too physical and too fast and whenever discipline prevailed and penalties disappeared they were the lords of the pitch dictating pace, controlling possession and securing a solid victory.
There were some great Brooklyn Baron breakaway runs; one occurred off an intercepted ball by Geoff Gordon which led to a try by Justin Knight. There was also plenty of hard, determined running by the Barons. During a patch of play, which included great passing between the forwards and backs, Garrick Anderson took a pass and darted hard inside to score a try. The Barons stole many scrums and executed their line-outs with precision. They used this turnover of possession to lead to the final try scored by a hard running Davey Ron down the sideline to seal the victory.
Suffolk played to the final whistle and looked to score more from overlaps in the backline but Brooklyn’s Barons stifled the attacks with solid tackles and a defensive tenacity that smothered offensive potential.
The Brooklyn Barons B side played a Suffolk team made up of many A side players. What Suffolk lacked in energy they made up for in experience but still could not weather the storm of the Brooklyn Barons attack. Excellent ball handling, full use of the pitch, great defense and, as always, solid fast running were too much for Suffolk to handle. Mike Walker scored an excellent support try running hard off the shoulder of Alan Foster, who just scored minutes early himself. Josh Magnas scored a superb try of his own as he was flipped over in the tackle but was not held, so he quickly scrambled to his feet to dot the ball down between the posts.
Discipline is the key ingredient missing in the Brooklyn Barons rugby. Sloppy passing and silly penalties must be avoided or they may prove fatal to the Barons’ winning season.
