Beach cleanup

Thousands of volunteers from local environmental groups, students, scouts, dive clubs, civic organizations, corporations, government agencies, and the general public will participate in a “Volunteer for New York State Beach Cleanup” event, September 20.

Cleanups will take place at more than 300 beaches statewide. Organized in New York by the American Littoral Society and part of the International Coastal Cleanup of The Ocean Conservancy, volunteers will compile data to devise strategies to combat pollution while increasing both public participation in solving the problems of pollution and public appreciation of the coastal environment.

In 2007, more than 9,000 New Yorkers came together to do something constructive for the environment, removing and documenting 142,000 pounds of debris at 285 sites.

Interested volunteers can call the Beach Cleanup Hotline at 1-800-449-0790 or visit www.alsnyc.org.
