Not even the stadium lights cutting off at 11 p.m. could slow down the Brooklyn Motorboats from claiming their first Kickball All-Star title, outlasting an exhausted and depleted Atlanta team, 8-1.
“We’ve been playing thirty innings of kickball. I want to go home,” said Jennifer Youngblood, a kickball player with the Brooklyn Motorboats.
A 20-minute delay resulting from the Parks Department shutting down electricity on McCarren Park’s Home Field caused both teams to retreat into their respective dugouts after the fifth inning. Many of the kickball players had been playing games since 1 p.m., and some of the teams who lost in the playoffs stayed to cheer on their All-Star friends.
“We won our first game and tied our second game, but we had a three-hour layover,” Vanessa Martin, Captain of Team Kickstand, said. “We ate a lot of food and we were weighed down by it.”
Nevertheless, led by Kate Brown’s excellent fielding and Matt Sadewitz kicking prowess, the Brooklyn Motorboats claimed victory and celebrated like kings.
“This tournament, even more so than playing during the regular season, is the perfect example of Brooklyn Kickball,” said Sadewitz, team captain of the Motorboats. “We’re making new friends and having a lot of fun running around and being silly.”
