Bocce is life at area park

It was a ball-lobbing bonanza.

Two dozen area residents threw their hearts out last week to grab their share of Bocce Ball glory during the Marine Park Bocce Club’s first summer tournament Friday.

Six teams hit the courts, but it was Veronica O’Brien’s crew, which included Mindy Rispoli, Larry Cousins and Vito Stancanelli, that stood victorious, winning the $80 prize money.

Like true teammates, the players split the winnings, going home with $20 apiece.

On hand to cheer them on was longtime Bocce Ball player Anne Vincent, who, at 101, refrained from showing off her seasoned skills on the court.

Celebrating its fourteenth year, the Marine Park Bocce Club welcomes anyone to come and play. Members play at the courts, located on the Fillmore Avenue side of the park almost nightly between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. from April to October.

Marine Park Bocce Club President Ellie Caporale said that the tournament was good practice for a city tournament that will be held at the Marine Park Bocce Courts in September.
