Boody-IS 228 wins Junior High Novice Chess Crown for third year

The David A. Boody Intermediate School for Magnet Studies-IS 228 chess team won the first place award for the Junior High Novice level for the third straight year at the 44th Annual Greater New York Scholastic Chess Championships.

The Boody Chess team is lead by Chess Master Bruce Fuchs, a Brooklyn native whose teams at IS 228, 228 Avenue S in Gravesend, won two national championship titles in the 1990s. Principal Dominick A. D’Angelo brought Fuchs out of retirement in 2007 to restore the team to its earlier levels of success.

Fuchs said the open section competition at the Greater New York was “incredible. We were up against some incredible players.”

The Boody students are grateful to have their veteran teacher back, too.
