Kind-hearted vollies helped make the holidays brighter for underprivileged neighbors by giving them “Boxes of Love” during a Thanksgiving outreach campaign, presented by the Salt & Sea Mission.
The gracious bunch handed out several hundred dinners to recipients on the sidewalk in front of the ministry, 1530 Mermaid Avenue, as part of the annual drive, established more than 20 years ago by Salt & Sea Founder Rev. Debbe Santiago, herself a former homeless person.
The dinners include all the raw ingredients to cook a Thanksgiving dinner, including vegetables, bread, stuffing, gravy, dessert and a voucher for a 10-pound turkey, redeemable at a local Pathmark store.
“We want to make sure that families on Coney Island enjoys a wonderful Thanksgiving,” said Santiago, whose mission volunteers delivered several hundred more holiday dinners later that evening to local homebound seniors and disabled people.
This year’s “Boxes of Love”drive was sponsored by Taconic Investment Partners, a real estate firm that owns several major properties in Coney Island.
