Celebrity readers are a boon for bibliophiles

Tinseltown titan, Golden Globe winner and Brooklyn Heights resident Gabriel Byrne assumed a new role as a tale-teller when he helped celebrate the written word during a star-studded literacy benefit in DUMBO, hosted by Public School 8.

The star of HBO’s In Treatment shared the spotlight with more than a dozen authors at Umbrage Gallery, 111 Front Street, where he read excerpts from “Dubliners,” a collection of short stories penned by fellow Ireland-native James Joyce.

The two-part reading also featured offerings by Tad Friend, author of, among others, “Cheerful Money”; Melissa Milgrom, “Still Life: Adventures in Taxidermy”; and Rich Benjamin, “Searching for Whitopia: An Improbable Journey into the Heart of White America.”

Other guest readers included Fiona Maazel, “Last Last Chance: A Novel”; Paul Zelinsky, “Wheels on a Bus”; and Sarah Langan, “Audrey’s Door.”

Proceeds will benefit Public School 8, 37 Hicks Street.
