Cops collared a man on Aug. 1 who they say pretended to be a police officer in order to rob and rape a woman in Sunset Park.
Police say Jason Forgetta met the 26-year-old victim on a street in Sunset Park at 2:18 am on July 30, flashed a gold shield, and identified himself as a police officer before the woman invited him up to her apartment, reports state.
Once inside, Forgetta allegedly beat and raped the woman before taking her cell phone, money, and pocketbook and fleeing scene, law enforcement sources said.
After the attack, the woman alerted police and was taken to an area hospital where she was treated for her injuries, according to police.
The victim provided the NYPD’s Police Impersonation Unit with a detailed description of her alleged attacker, including the license plate number of the vehicle he fled in, officials said.
Using that information, police say they identified Forgetta and visited several addresses where he had been known to stay — ultimately tracking him down at his place of work near 17th Avenue and 62nd Street, where he was arrested at 9:30 am, three days after the attack, reports state.
Forgetta is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree robbery, and criminal impersonation, police said.
Authorities believe Forgetta impersonated an officer on a regular basis, having posted a photo of himself with a gold shield around his neck to his Facebook page.
