Crime statistics in the 76th Precinct are mostly good, a little bad, but certainly not ugly, according to the precinct’s top cop, who pointed to data showing a downward trend of criminal activity.
For the year, according to Captain Kenneth Corey, all major categories of crime continue to fall in the 76th Precinct compared to last year. According to police data for the week ending Nov. 30, robberies are down 24.1 percent on the year, grand larceny is down 5.9 percent, car thefts have dropped 14 percent, while burglaries dropped 4.7 percent compared to 2008.
Assaults have declined 13.6 percent, and rapes cut by 66.7 percent, with one case reported so far compared to three last year. Murders are down too, with three reported this year compared to five last year.
Overall, crime is down for the year 11.9 percent, the data shows, with 481 incidents in total reported compared to 541 in 2008.
In the past 28 days, the data is good, but not as sunny. Crime is down 6.82 percent, with grand larceny showing an 18.8 percent increase, with 19 reported cases compared to 16 last year, and burglaries up 22.2 percent, with 11 incidents reported compared to nine in 2008.In the past 28 days, car thefts are down 20 percent compared to the same window in time in 2008. Assaults are also down 20 percent, and robberies have fallen 62.6 percent in this time period. Rapes are flat, with no incidents reported, and there have been no murders reported in the last 28 days, compared to one in 2008.
The “bad” Corey noted, were the burglaries and the grand larceny numbers for the last month. He said the vast majority of the grand larcenies were identity theft and unattended property. “These are typically crimes of opportunity,” he noted, urging residents to safeguard their purses, wallets or other valuable items no matter if they are shopping, walking the dog, or quickly popping into a local deli.
The precinct covers Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Boerum Hill, and Gowanus.
