Even being in a wheelchair didn’t stop Myra Haynes from participating in a walk-a-thon for the American Diabetes Association in Sheepshead Bay on Saturday.
The Good Samaritan joined a group of about 50 clients, staff and supporters of the Crown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for its latest community outreach effort — the South Brooklyn Health Walk, beginning at Avenue U and Nostrand Avenue and pounding the pavement all the way to the Baron DeKalb Knights of Columbus Hall on Emmons Avenue, off Nostrand.
The jaunt hailed the memory of beloved owner and administrator Sally Gearhart-Schnabel, who lost her own battle in July with the disease, which the Health Department states afflicts about 10 percent of Brooklyn residents.
“The fact that people in wheelchairs wanted to do this was very nice,” said Susie Lyons, who also put her best foot forward for her lifelong friend whom she described as “a remarkable woman.”
“She went beyond what was asked of her,” said Lyons.
Her industrious clients helped raise $5,000, said Magdalene Jackson, director of the Sheepshead Bay facility which also coordinates health and legal clinics for the community in addition to special events such as the walk.
