More than 150 aspiring pastry chefs, foodies, and cupcake fanatics stuffed themselves into Union Pool (484 Union Avenue) Monday night for the Brooklyn Kitchen’s Second Annual Cupcake Cookoff.
The cupcakes ranged widely from fruit flavors including Kari Lobe’s passion fruit and cream cheese frosting to alcohol soaked batters such as the Mint Julep cupcake submitted by last year’s winner, Califia Suntree.
Members of the public who tasted samples awarded the Best in Show to Kate Brown for her chocolate cupcake with salted caramel frosting, but the most creative name for a cupcake surely belonged to Melissa Rebholz. Her red velvet strawberry rhubarb pie cupcake, entitled, ‘I can’t believe I moved to Bushwick for you,’ was dedicated to an ex-boyfriend. After tasting the cupcake, he should have known better. “I’m not in Bushwick anymore,” Rebholz said.
