Cyclones 5
Jammers 7
Tuesday, July 6 at Jamestown
Well, at least you can’t blame the relief pitching for this tough road loss.
The Jammers took it to starting pitcher Wes Wrenn (1-2, 4.50 ERA) early and often — then pummeled his reliever Nelson Pereira.
Brooklyn actually got on the board first, thanks to Jeff Flagg’s leadoff double, his sixth of the year, and a subsequent SAC fly by William Cherry.
But Wrenn yielded three runs in the bottom of the second on consecutive doubles and then consecutive singles.
He gave up another RBI single in the third.
Wrenn was gone when Pereira gave up three runs of his own, aided by two wild pitches and a spate of singles.
The Clones got one run back on a Joe Bonfe solo homer, his first of the year, and then tried to make a game of it by scoring three in the ninth, all on Kurt Steinhauer’s first homer.
The loss dropped the Cyclones two and a half games behind the Yankees.
The Cyclones remain on the road now and will return home on Thursday, July 8 against the State College Spikes. Game time is 7 pm at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 19th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449-8497]. For info, visit www.brooklyncyclones.com.
