They aren’t interested in unclenching their fists.
President Obama has branded Iran as “one of the greatest threats to the United States, Israel and world peace,” vowing “our job is to never forget that the threat of violence is real.”
He has cautioned nuke-happy North Korea that its lawlessness will be met with “appropriate steps.”
Bam’s lukewarm warnings have rendered explosive returns. In spring, Iran tested a medium-range, surface-to-surface rocket capable of reaching Greece, Italy and Israel. On the heels of that, North Korea re-tested a nuclear bomb similar to those which annihilated Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.
Unsurprisingly, the White House finds itself walking in the perplexed footsteps of its predecessors who also were at a loss over how to deal with undesirable nations. Without a defined agenda for Iran’s nerve, and cornered by North Korea’s lawlessness, President Obama is passing the buck onto the United Nations, a bastion of incompetency judged back in 1967 by President Nixon as being “obsolete and inadequate.”
Add to the pot Obama’s misguided faith in the Six-Party Talks between the US, China, North Korea, South Korea, Russia and Japan, an idle forum which has done bupkas to right Pyongyang’s wrongs since its inception six years ago to discuss North Korea’s denuclearization: China continues to pay lip service; Japan is tremulous over North Korea’s abduction of Japanese citizens in the late ’70s and early ’80s, many of whom remain kidnapped, today; complacent and impotent South Korea is too emotionally bound to its north; and still-smarting former super-power Russia has vowed “not to rush to punish North Korea just for punishment’s sake.”
Back in May 2005, then-Senator Obama knew that the rogue nation was one of the world’s “biggest proliferation challenges.” Now, as leader of the Free World, President Obama is expressing only “grave concern” over the unchecked lunacy of Kim Jong Il, who has already dismissed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as “the funny lady.”
Candidate Obama told The Jerusalem Post, “I can assure you, if someone was sending rockets into my house…I’m going to do everything in my power to stop that.” As president, though, he is ignoring Iran’s nuclear aspirations, instead imploring for the “common humanity that binds us together,” an appeal that has been flatly rejected by President Ahmadinejad for whom the nuclear issue “is closed.”
When the bard wrote, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players,” he didn’t mean that the leader of the Free World should kowtow to tyrants with violence and oppression as their guiding lights.
