Senator Carl Kruger, a longtime member of the Aging Committee, visited the apartment of Chana Reiss, a Midwood senior citizen who graciously invited the lawmaker to sample her homemade latkes (potato pancakes).
Reiss, a member of the Young Israel of Midwood senior center, met Kruger at a center event and was so taken with him that she sent a handwritten Chanukah card that called him “a special person,” among other accolades. Reiss extended the latke invitation in the card. “My grandchildren would love to meet you,” she said.
Kruger met Reiss’s grandchildren, along with her neighbors, at her home on Ocean Avenue, where he sampled her homemade latkes and sufganyiot (jelly donuts) and discussed the issues of the day.
The conversation, he said, was both “fruitful and enlightening.” And the potato latkes, he added, were “incredibly delicious…just the way latkes are supposed to be.”
