To The Editor:
Today, New York’s public transportation provides residents with low-cost, 24/7 access to most of the city. This means that every New Yorker is a potential customer, employee, visitor, or member at every business, event, or place of worship.
Next year, this may all change. The MTA approved its “Doomsday” budget. If passed, the cuts would be so deep, and the fare increases so steep, that public transportation between many parts of the city will be effectively cut off from each other. Most everyone will feel the sting of fewer visitors.
Businesses and places of worship that depend on diverse visitors may begin to fail.
I fear that this Doomsday budget will truly herald’s New York’s Doomsday. I fear that New York will begin a nasty downward spiral, as it loses capital, loses talent, loses culture, which in turn cause further loss of ridership and funding for public transportation.
