Enhanced cardiac care in Brooklyn

The Mount Sinai Hospital and Lutheran Medical Center have agreed to enter into a clinical affiliation to offer premier cardiac care in Brooklyn. Mount Sinai and Lutheran have applied to New York State for permission to jointly operate the May Ellen and Gerald Ritter Diagnostic Cardiology Center on Lutheran’s campus.

Under this new initiative, The Mount Sinai Hospital’s-Mount Sinai Heart (MSH) will help provide extended cardiac care, equipment, training, clinical support, on-call physician access and administrative services to the catheterization lab at Lutheran. This new partnership is designed to provide residents of the community with easier, more rapid access to needed cardiac specialty medical and surgical services.

“Mount Sinai is excited about the prospect of working more closely with Lutheran Medical Center. We look forward to bringing Mount Sinai Heart’s expertise to this new alliance and further developing our relationship beyond cardiac care,” said Dr. Kenneth L. Davis, President and CEO, The Mount Sinai Hospital.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to partner with Mount Sinai for our community’s health,” said Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO, Lutheran Medical Center. “Area patients will be able to draw upon the combined resources and experience of medical experts at both Lutheran and Mount Sinai Heart for the best possible cardiac care.”

“I am very enthusiastic about this affiliation,” said Dr. Samin Sharma, director of Interventional Cardiology, Mount Sinai Heart. “Good cardiac care in southwest Brooklyn can only get better with the majority of cardiac care now provided locally at the Lutheran Medical Center.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Mount Sinai and bring a new high quality cardiac service to the Brooklyn community,” said Robert Zaloom, MD, Lutheran Medical Center cardiologist and director of the May Ellen and Gerald Ritter Diagnostic Cardiology Center. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Sunset Park and Brooklyn. With convenient access to the best diagnostic technology, we can change this statistic. It’s what Brooklyn deserves and what our patient’s expect.”

As area cardiac deaths and hospitalizations remain at alarming levels, Lutheran’s catheterization lab received broad support among community based organizations and New York’s elected officials. The construction of the cardiac suite was made possible by the generous financial contributions of the May Ellen and Gerald Ritter Foundation, a private charitable foundation established to provide funding for public charities in the Greater New York area.

Lutheran Medical Center is located at 150 55th Street.
