Artist Viva Ruiz leads a walkthrough of Andy Warhol: Revelation in this edition of Artist’s Eye, our series of intimate, in-gallery talks by contemporary artists that engage our special exhibitions with fresh perspectives. Ruiz is an artist, community- and nightlife-educated activist, and the creator of Thank God for Abortion. Conceived in 2015 in response to the closing of abortion clinics throughout the United States, Thank God for Abortion aims to destigmatize abortion through art and protest and to counter right-wing associations between “sin” and sexual and reproductive healthcare. In this tour, Ruiz explores the themes and iconography of Catholicism in Warhol’s work and shares how she has engaged with the idea of God in her own practice.
