Brooklyn, NY — The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) is celebrating summer with three new exhibitions from Saturday, July 30 through Sunday, August 28, 2022. Together, they are designed to refresh and rejuvenate your spirit during the most relaxed time of the year:

More Art of Coney Island
Building on BWAC’s success of last summer’s, The Art of Coney Island, More Art of Coney Island is a bigger, better, all-new exploration of the spirit and place. Coney Island is more than a place; it looms large in myth and legend, plus it is a state of mind and lifestyle for the people who live and work there. It can be both the epitome of fun and a symbol of survival. It is a prime source of nostalgia and a hope for better days. This exhibition encompasses the attraction/aversion emotions that Coney Island can evoke, through Coney-inspired photographs, drawings, paintings, prints and more.

What, at this particular time in history, does “fun” mean? Should we be allowed to experience fun given the current world environment? Is fun a memory of things past? Or should it be included as a part of a balanced mental diet, as essential as the food we eat? Is it a feeling, a sensation, a moment, a dream? In answering these questions, BWAC member artists present FUN, an exhibition that holds surprise, discovery — and fun — for viewers.

The Model Wife
Accomplished photographer Sarah Baley has graciously given gallery visitors insight into her studio work-in-progress series, The Model Wife. Reimagining a book published in 1999 by photographer/author Arthur Ollman — from her own perspective as a Femme/LGBTQI+ artist — Ms. Baley presents thought-provoking images of her wife as developing commentary on the previous book’s exploration of the work of nine male photographers who used their wives as models. Half the proceeds of sales from this exhibition will be donated equally to the Ali Forney Center and Planned Parenthood.

There will be an opening reception for all three exhibitions at BWAC, 481 Van Brunt Street, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, on Saturday, July 30 from 1 to 6 pm. The gallery is open weekends from 1 to 6 pm through the duration of the shows to Sunday, August 28.

About BWAC
Now in its 44th year, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition is Brooklyn’s largest artist-run, nonprofit 501(c)3 arts organization. BWAC offers art exhibition and performance opportunities — including music, spoken word, puppetry and more — for artists at any stage of their career. Plus, BWAC hosts national juried exhibitions, all in a welcoming, informal atmosphere so art is accessible, artists are approachable, and buyers can affordably begin a collection or add to an existing one. BWAC is located in two stories of a Civil War-era warehouse space on the Red Hook waterfront.
