First Creekers Jamboree of the 2021 season

May 29, 5 pm8 pm.
$0-$20

Description:

Creekers Jamboree is kicking off the 2021 season with a performance by The Honky Tonk Heroes at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club Boathouse.

Creekers Jamboree is a music series that celebrates Roots and Americana music on the banks of the Gowanus Canal.

In the mid 1800s, Creekers and Pointers were rival gangs of the Roosters, a band of thugs that frequented South Brooklyn and Gowanus.  This season, the Gowanus Dredgers are reconnecting Gowanus regulars and visitors with events at our canal. We hope to offer free canoe voyages on Saturdays before shows, south of the active EPA cleanup (location TBD), but stop by our boathouse for some hootin’ good times as the sun sets.

For inquiries about this or any events at the Creekers Jamboree, please e-mail: creekers@gowanuscanal.org

TRIP HENDERSON, “The Merry Monarch of the Mouthharp”: Trip has worked with the Sun Records Rhythm Section (Elvis Presley’s band), Tom Paxton, Bo Diddley, Bruce Springsteen, Otis Rush, Hazel Dickens, John Sebastian, Homesick James, B.B. King, and bluegrass icon John Herald, among many others. Currently he teaches harmonica at the Jalopy School of Music and performs with his other main band, Stillhouse Serenade.

GENE YELLIN, lead vocals and guitar: Gene has been playing bluegrass in the New York area for over 35 years and has played with Hazel Dickens, Breakfast Special, Yellin Grass (with his bluegrass banjo-playing brother, Bob), and numerous other bands.

CHARLIE GIORDANO, piano and accordion: Prior to joining Bruce Springsteen, Charlie toured with Hall & Oates, Joe Cocker, and David Johansen’s “Buster Poindexter” alter ego, and was a member of Pat Benatar’s backing band.

DANNY WEISS has been singing and playing guitar for over 50 years and has been in love with country music at least that long. A founding member of the seminal newgrass band Tony Trischka and Skyline, Danny has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Bottom Line, and more, and has appeared with Vassar Clements, Tex Logan, and David Bromberg.

SKIP WARD is a Grammy Award winning bassist, guitarist, ukulele-ist (is that a word?), and lap steel, tuba, and penny whistle player who can also get around on piano and sings background vocals . . . okay, Skip Ward, musician.
