Homage To Popova: an experiment in puppetry
Hanne Tierney
The drawings of the Russian avant-garde artist, painter, and designer Lyubov Popova are the inspiration for this work. Tierney has always loved these drawings, in part because of the lively movement of their lines, crossing and criss-crossing each other.
Looking at the underlying structures of Popova’s drawings, it seemed possible to Tierney to construct them in three-dimensions and let them become the performers in her re-telling of the Christian Anderson story, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’. At the time Tierney began working on this piece, that story seemed a good parody of the Trump Administration and its tricky relationship to the slippery nature of the Truth. The slippery nature of these lightweight constructions does not make them ideal performers, but trying to work it out has been an interesting pleasure for the artist.
