Description:

Maestrina Adriana Portela to join Fogo Azul NYC to bring a Summer of Samba Reggae to New York City Communities

New York, NY, June 8, 2022

Fogo Azul NYC, the largest all-female samba reggae drum corps in North America, is thrilled to      welcome world-famous samba reggae conductor Maestrina Adriana Portela to New York for a Summer of Samba Reggae.

Portela is the pioneering artistic director of Banda DiDa, Brazil’s first all-female Afro-Brazilian percussion band, and the first Black female drumline conductor in the history of Salvador, Brazil. As DiDa’s dynamic leader, she also leads a movement of resistance, combatting Brazil’s long history of racism and anti-feminism with music, community and education.

While here, Maestrina Portela will offer her singular musical contributions through free public workshops and events, and join Fogo Azul Founder and Artistic Director Stacy Kovacs in leading Fogo Azul’s 100-strong drummers at the following marches and parades (list is formation):

  • Mermaid Parade, Coney Island, June 18th
  • Make Music NY, under the Unisphere, June 21st
  • NYC Dyke March, June 25th
  • 4th of July Parade, Ridgefield Park NJ, July 4th
  • Public Workshop, Concert Grove in Prospect Park July 24th
  • Public Workshop, Concert Grove in Prospect Park, August 14th

In February 2020, Maestrina Portela led the largest-ever contingent of women drummers in Salvador’s world-famous Carnival. Fogo Azul drummers joined Banda Dida to mark this moment in Brazilian history – and we eagerly await Adriana’s arrival in the US.

In the quarter-century since Dida’s creation, Portela’s incredible music, inspiring artistry and powerful feminist leadership have helped over 2000 young Salvadoran women of color gain confidence and strength through the powerful drums that become extensions of their physical bodies. Her 2022 world tour also includes engagements in France, Spain and Canada.

For interviews, digital media and additional information, contact Fogo Azul Founder and Artistic      Director, Stacy Kovacs fogoazulnyc@gmail.com or via phone at (929) 344-8107.

Fogo Azul NYC is a New York City–based all-women, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming Brazilian Samba Reggae drum line Fogo Azul (Blue Fire) was born at the intersection of founder and Buffalo, NY native, Stacy Kovacs’ passion for Samba Reggae, her deep respect for its cultural roots as a music of protest and resistance, her belief and activism in support of gender equality and her sense of civic duty in the current environment to publicly awaken and inspire people to resist oppression and exercise their power to uplift society — loudly.
