Marine Park Alliance Chinese New Year 2021 Virtual Celebration
In popular Chinese astrology, the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is an important date marking the start of a new year on the lunar calendar.
“Historically, the lunar new year and its celebrations are a time to look to the future. The change in the years represents the desire for a new life in the new year, something that feels especially important this year. I’m sure our virtual event can provide that inspiration and hope virtually, wishing all well for a good year, as represented by the Ox,” remarked Maria D’Alessandro of Marine Park Alliance.
According to Chinese astrology, the new year will be designated the Year of the Ox, a valued animal in Chinese culture due to its role in agriculture with positive attributes of being hardworking and honest.
Although this year will go virtual, it will still pay homage and celebrate Chinese traditions. The digital event will have a variety of fun and educational programming, including a bit of history, stories, a food demonstration by Christina Chang, a lantern craft, Chinese horoscopes, and even a dance event featuring the Brooklyn Dance Center.
The free event is available to all via the organization’s Facebook and YouTube channels and their website at marineparkalliance.org.
The Chinese New Year event furthers the organization’s commitment to providing quality cultural and environmental programming to all New Yorkers. For more information about Marine Park Alliance and its mission and work, please visit marineparkalliance.org.
Marine Park Alliance assists NYC Parks with a mission to provide cultural, environmental and volunteer programming in Marine Park for the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To carry out this mission the group envisions elevating this regional park as a southern Brooklyn cultural gem – horticulturally, programmatically, and ecologically – free to the public.
