Free and open to the public!

Van Alen Institute’s inaugural Block Party is a celebration of our new home in Gowanus! We’ll bring Sackett Street alive with street art, free treats, family activities, and live dance and music.

For more than 125 years, our purposeful community engagement, convening capacity, and global network have produced profound transformations in the public realm of New York City and beyond.

GG’s Fish and Chips — serving meals all afternoon, with free food 1:30-3:30 pm
Pizza Moto — free slices 1:30–3:30 pm

1 pm | DancewaveLeading a dance workshop celebrating the cultural richness of different world regions

1:30 pm | Fogo Azul
A women and gender nonconforming drumline with Brazilian/samba/reggae roots
Founded in Gowanus!

2 pm | La Cumbiamba eNeYé
Powerfully rhythmic Afro-Colombian music with traditional instruments from the African Diaspora
Based in Gowanus!

3 pm | KONANTÜ, Remolino de Suerte (Swirl of Luck)
Artists Courtney Smith and Iván Navarro lead a participatory performance invoking the culture of mutual aid that emerged during the pandemic — sign up here

3:45 pm | DJ Scribe
Bringing the energy of his legendary I Love Vinyl dance parties to Gowanus

5 pm | Gowanus Wildcats Drill Team
The multigenerational, all-star drill team that started in NYCHA’s Gowanus Houses in 1970 and is now a New York institution
Based in Gowanus!

5:30 pm | DJ Niara Sterling
Having played famed NYC spots like House of Yes and Le Bain, DJ Niara Sterling closes out the day with a sunset dance party

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES

Gowanus Mutual Aid is collecting items for their Free Store located (located on the corner of Bond and Douglass St).

Mechanical Gardens Bike Co-op is providing bike repair on-site, including air, flat fixes, brakes, and chain maintenance.

Gowanus raffle — At the Block Party, sign up for Van Alen’s newsletter for a chance to win gift cards from Dirty Precious, Four & Twenty Blackbirds, and Wild East Brewing Co.; and wine from Black Mountain Wine House. (Ages 21+)
