To The Editor:
Few experts expected the Sheepshead Bay High School Boys 4×100 Track Team to vie for the national title at the USA Nike Nationals North Carolina A&T University because few PSAL boys teams have prevailed in the recent past.
But vie they did, winning in a hairsbreadth .005 of a second, against 50 nationally-ranked high schools, including teams from Florida and Texas. Darryl Bradshaw ran leadoff, Ayo Isijola and John Thomas scorched the middle legs, and Naquan Alexander brought home the bacon-or the baton in a photo finish that left Sheepshead and second place Bethell High School from Virginia, waiting minutes for the results of the race.
Earlier this season, the team experienced some other accomplishments: Sheepshead’s champion 4×100 relay won the New York State championship race in Buffalo on June 14, and Darryl Bradshaw was named PSAL Indoor/Outdoor MVP in the spring.
Bradshaw and teammate Ayo Isijola, both juniors, boast averages of 85-plus. Relay mates Thomas and Alexander are sophomores.
