Troop 20 scout and Kingsborough Community College freshman Danny Wing has accomplished his goal – to make his late mom proud.
The Bensonhurst resident, who belongs to the nation’s oldest scouting troop, was hailed with his organization’s most prized accolade when he was inducted into the Eagle Court of Honor during a pomp-filled ceremony at New Utrecht Church, 84th Street and 18th Avenue.
Danny, a member of the Knights of Columbus and dispatcher for BRAVO Volunteer Ambulance Service, turned his sorrow into action following the death, four years ago, of his beloved mother, Joan, a teacher and scouting official, who encouraged her son to become a cub scout in 1997.
Danny’s father, Craig, an EMS lieutenant with Coney Island Hospital, had the honor of pinning the Eagle flag on his son – a role traditionally reserved for the mother – during a ceremony, attended by Assemblymember Peter Abbate and State Senator Marty Golden.
For his Eagle project, Danny, a Black Belt in karate who hails from a family of martial artists, organized a community emergency preparedness fair, in keeping with the scouting motto, “Be Prepared.”
Troop 20 was incorporated in 1910 and has been sponsored by the 329-year-old New Utrecht Reformed Church continuously since then.
