February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the Second District Dental Society, a component of the New York State Dental Association and the American Dental Association, has a strong commitment to improving the Oral Health status of the Children of Brooklyn and Staten Island ensuring that our children have healthy smiles.
Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Millions of school hours are lost each year to dental-related diseases. In an attempt to address this problem, the American Dental Association will be sponsoring the annual “Give Kids a Smile Day,” February 6. This nationwide campaign is aimed at providing access to dental care to children in underserved communities. Schools are being urged to encourage parents to participate in programs being held at participating hospitals throughout the borough.
A “Give Kids A Smile Day” program in Brooklyn will be launched at the New York City College of Technology Department of Dental Hygiene, 300 Jay Street, with the Senior Dental Hygiene Students providing oral health evaluation, oral prophylaxis (cleaning), topical fluoride treatment and sealant placement. The day’s activity will also include the New York Methodist Hospital Division of Dental Medicine Program which will include oral health evaluations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and construction of mouth guards for sports related groups.
