Grocery catches fire

A smoky blaze at a Midwood grocery store sent waves of terror to a neighboring Jewish house of worship, who feared that the fire would consume their Torahs.

Officials said that firefighters were dispatched to the grocery, located at 2917 Avenue J near East 29th Street just before 8 p.m. on September 7.

In a matter of moments, the street was filled with smoke, witnesses said. As firefighters doused the blaze, worshippers at the neighboring synagogue ran inside their shul and rescued the Torahs in case the fire spread.

The fire was declared under control at 9:15 p.m., officials said. The fire was put out before any serious damage was done to the synagogue.

FDNY officials said that two injuries were reported, although it was unclear if the wounded were firefighters or civilians. All injuries were minor.

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation as this paper went to press.
