This slugfest went right down to the final out, but the Cyclones held on for the three-game sweep of the hated Staten Island Yankees.
The Clones got on the board first, thanks to a walk, singles by Dock Doyle and team-leading hitter Sam Honeck (.324), an error, an RBI single by Tyler Vaughn, and a two-out single by Robbie Shields.
The Yankees got a run back in the bottom of the frame, but the Cyclones stormed back with two in the fourth.
Justin Garber led off with a double and Doyle followed with a single. Both later scored on a key Yankee error, one of seven (yes, seven) on the night.
Another run scored in the fifth on Nicholas Santomauro’s third homer of the year — and second in as many games. The solo shot gave the Cyclones a 7–1 lead.
But it was no laugher. In the bottom of the fifth, starter Brandon Moore tired, yielding a leadoff single and a homer to Neil Medchill, his league-leading ninth of the year.
After a walk and and a triple, Moore was done. Reliever Mike Lynn gave up a SAC fly, but put out the fire and the Cyclones escaped still leading 7-5.
Michael Johnson then relieved Lynn and promptly gave up a run on a walk, an error and a single. But he did induce a bases-loaded pop-up to end the inning with the Cyclones still ahead 7-6.
The Cyclones got another run in the seventh, thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
But the Yankees came back and tied the score in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a leadoff homer and a wild pitch by reliever Erik Turgeon, who recorded his first blown save of the year.
But the Cyclones made a winner of Turgeon in the next inning, scoring the game winners on a walk, a Vaughn single, a Ralph Henriquez RBI single and a groundout.
The Yankees got a run in the ninth, but reliever Matias Carrillo closed the door for his first save.
The win increased the Cyclones’ lead over the second-place Hudson Valley Renegades to 5-1/2 games. The Yankees are six back.
