The Cyclones had to wait two weeks to win this game, which was suspended early on Aug. 22 in the 12th inning due to rain. The Cyclones had just taken the lead, but Vermont had put a man on first and second with one out when the rains came.
The game was officially concluded last night in Coney Island, when closer Ryan Fraser recorded the last two outs.
It’s hard to remember what happened up in Vermont two weeks ago, but the Cyclones built a 5–2 lead, thanks to three runs in the third on Jeff Flagg’s dinger, and two in the fourth on a homer by Blake Forsythe and an RBI single by Darrell Ceciliani.
Vermont stormed back to take a 6–5 lead, but the Clones were heroic, putting up a two-spot in the eighth. Cory Vaughn led off by getting hit before Joe Bonfe homered to give the Clones the lead.
But reliever T.J. Chism couldn’t hold it, allowing the tying run to score on a wild pitch, sending the game into extras on a rainy Burlington night.
And what an eventful extra frames they were! The Cyclones got a man on second with no outs in the 11th, but failed to score. Then, Fraser put runners on first and second with one out, only to end the inning on a classic 4-6-3 double play.
In the 12th, the Cyclones scored on Justin Schafer’s SAC fly, and held on, despite the rain and the 10-day delay.
