Late DOS worker honored – Memorial for Allen Gormely

A Coney Island sanitation worker who suffered a fatal heart attack on duty was honored for his municipal service when his agency renamed his base in memory of the departed Strongest.

Allen Gormely, who worked out of Brooklyn South District 13 and died on September 11, 2006 while making his rounds, was immortalized in front of his peers by Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty, who presided over a ceremony, renaming the base on Neptune Avenue, between West 20th and West 21st streets, the “Allen Gormely Garage.”

The pomp-filled rites featured a Sanitation honor guard and a solemn serenade by the department’s Emerald Society Pipes & Drum Band.
