New look for 86th Street station

It’s not exactly a Madison Avenue gallery, but the 86th Street station on the R line will soon be sporting art, as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) proceeds with a program to put mosaic murals on the station’s mezzanine.

The project is part of Arts for Transit. An MTA panel recently picked five semifinalists ; they will select the winning artist by the end of April.

While Community Board 10 is happy about the art, members are not so happy about the process.

“I believe they should have had more people from the community on the panel with full voting rights,” contended Bob Cassara during CB 10’s March meeting, at the Norwegian Christian Home, 1250 67th Street.

Board members agreed, voting overwhelmingly to ask the MTA that the board have a larger role in the process of selecting the artwork that will adorn the station, which is currently being renovated.
