A new year began with a thought for the underprivileged when the Ocean View Jewish Center held a food distribution to hail the first High Holy Day of Rosh Hashanah.
The annual rite drew the faithful to the bustling community center and synagogue at 3100 Brighton 4th Street, where they received parcels of kosher food items to mark the holiday.
Translated literally as “head of the year” and commonly referred to as the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah is commemorated on the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar and begins the Ten Days of Repentance, which culminate with Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippir begins at sundown on October 8 and culminates the following evening.
