It’s Brooklyn vs. Brooklyn — and there might be some slime involved.
Nickelodeon, the goo−loving children’s channel, is giving parents their own version of the hit Kids’ Choice Awards.
Parents have until July 15 to vote on the TV network’s Parents Connect Web site, www.parentsconnect.com, for the coolest family−friendly places in their hometown.
For Brooklyn, there are 30 Parents’ Picks categories, each with nominees already selected by Nickelodeon’s New York−based staffers.
Of course, this being Brooklyn, opinionated parents gladly offered their thoughts on what’s tops in the borough.
The biggest battle might be waged over the borough’s best pizzeria.
The contenders include staples Grimaldi’s and Di Fara, as well as Two Boots on Second Street, Layla Jones on Court Street, Smiling Pizzeria on Seventh Avenue, Franny’s on Flatbush Avenue, and Motorino on Graham Avenue.
Maureen O’Malley−Byrnes, a Marine Park mother of three children under 10 years of age, said there’s no contest.
“My husband would pick Di Fara but I’m going with Grimaldi’s. It’s classic Brooklyn with a great view in a historic location. You can take the kids on a nice walk afterwards and see the Brooklyn Bridge. And it’s fantastic pizza,” she said.
Once your tummy’s full, how about some culture? But which local museum is best for kids?
Hmm…
Nickelodeon has three options — the New York Transit Museum, Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
Greenpoint resident Mario Aguila has his preference.
“If I had little ones, I probably would take them to the Children’s Museum. But my son is a little older, he’s 12 years old. I would probably take him to the Brooklyn Museum,” Aguila said.
Most importantly, “My kid likes things with bones and he likes to study insects, don’t tell me why. He loves that! Anything that has to do with science he likes a lot,” Aguila explained.
There’s many other categories like best ice cream parlor, favorite farmer’s market, and even top spot for a parent date night. But apparently, there aren’t enough choices to make Brooklynites happy.
“A lot of the places we truly use and love are not on that list,” said Park Slope mother Rachel Gertzog. “At the Brooklyn Children’s Theatre, every kid has an equal part and kids are taught how to perform in creative and self−empowering ways. It’s first−rate.”
Also missing is the Park Slope Dance Studio and the School at the Mark Morris Dance Center.
“Mark Morris has the best dance classes my daughter has ever had. It’s really a great place. I can’t believe it’s not there,” Gertzog said.
