Borough pacifists took the green road to world harmony – complete with handmade peace cranes – when they commemorated Hiroshima Day with a denuclearization rally at John Paul Jones Park.
Members of Bay Ridge Interfaith Peace Coalition assembled on 4th Avenue, between 96th and 97th streets, and walked to the sidewalk in front of the emerald empire also known as Cannonball Park at 101st Street, where they held a silent vigil to mark the 64th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
The yield of the explosion was later estimated at 15 kilotons, the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT. Three days later, a second bomb fell on the city of Nagasaki.
Carrying “Abolish Nuclear Weapons” signs and dressed in colors of mourning, rallyers handed out symbolic paper-crafted birds, and literature on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which will appear before the United States Senate for ratification this year.
