Service along the 2 and 5 train lines has been suspended across Brooklyn, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which blamed the disruption on a malfunctioning switch at Franklin Avenue.

Trains along the 3 and 4 lines remain in service, but are skipping stops between Utica Avenue and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center. For service to Kingston Avenue or Nostrand Avenue stops, the transit authority is advising straphangers to take the B45 bus from Franklin Avenue at St. John’s Place, or take the C train to Nostrand Avenue and from there transfer to a B44.

Southbound 2 trains will stop at South Ferry, while southbound 5 trains will terminate at Bowling Green, with neither train crossing into Brooklyn, according to the Authority.

Even after enduring long waits in the sweltering heat, some commuters, anticipating equally frustrating conditions topside, were reluctant to transfer to a bus.

“I’ve been down here for 20 minutes, and it’s overcrowded.” said Margaret Low, who waited on a packed Brooklyn-bound 5 train stalled in the station. “I would go and switch to a bus, but I’m afraid that’s going to be crowded too.”

Monday’s service cut mirrors a similar disruption that struck during the evening rush on Friday, when numbered lines including the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 trains suffered a citywide shutdown beginning at 6 p.m., stranding straphangers mere hours after Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in response to a brutal heat wave, which caused significant blackouts throughout southern Brooklyn.
