Only five hits in bad loss to Yanks

Yankees 3

Cyclones 1

After the headiness of the All-Star Game, where eight Cyclones stood as heroes, the team was flat as a pita bread in the opener of its last series of the season against the hated Yankees.

Yes, the Clones got on the board first, thanks to Jeff Flagg’s RBI double, but the bats went silent, wasting a great outing by starter Jonathan Kountis, who gave us just two hits in five innings.

Reliever Adam Kolarek gave up two runs in the seventh, and that was the end of that.

Slugger Cory Vaughn was a last-minute scratch due to an injury to his elbow. He’s day to day.

Darrell Ceciliani, who is falling apart in his quest to be the first player in the New York–Penn League to hit .400 since 1971, went 1-for-4, lowering his average to .362.

The Cyclones’ first-place lead is now eight-and-a-half games.
