A peace movement grew in Brooklyn from the mouths of babes when pint-sized pacifists sowed the seeds of harmony and self-reflection during a peace rally at Public School 269.
Students transformed the yard of the school, 1957 Nostrand Avenue, into a solidarity walkway, marching with homemade banners, emblazoned with messages of hope and unity, and delivering song, dance and spoken word medleys about the joys of living a violence-free life.
The march concluded a month-long, school-wide peace project, which included lessons, discussions and activities around the theme, “Building a Strong Character and a Bully-Free School.”
For the past six years, students have been working with the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) of the Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility.
“It has been their goal to use the skills they have learned to resolve conflicts in school, as well as in the neighborhood, to create a more peaceable school community,” said Principal Phyllis P. Corbin.
