Survivor testimonies, plus a candle lighting ceremony, were among the poignant tributes paid during a Holocaust memorial at the Young Israel of Midwood in tribute to the 20,000 Jews who sought refuge in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during World War II.
The Yom Hashoah commemoration recalled the horrors of one of history’s sinister periods with a commemorative program at the synagogue, 1694 Ocean Avenue, attended by area dignitaries, veterans and residents.
The Shanghai ghetto was an approximately one-mile area in the Hongkou District which provided a haven for Jews fleeing from Nazi Germany, Austria, Poland and Lithuania.
