Sand is their mural at Coney Island contest

Beneath an umbrella of storm clouds, Coney’s white sands were clay in the creative clutches of budding Michelangelos, who went to work molding their masterpieces during the annual sand−sculpting contest sponsored by Astella Development Corporation.

Armed with pails, shovels and an ocean’s worth of imagination, budding sculptors joined veteran sand artisans on the stretch off the Boardwalk at West 12th Street, where, despite a grim weather forecast, they helped transform the beachfront into a temporary landscape of head−turning art pieces, some whimsical, others classic, but all a picturesque portrait of Brooklyn’s innovative streak.

Among the crowd−pleasers was a rendition of late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, an Astroland rocket and a cheery assortment of sandcastles and mermaids.
