Say hello to Brooklyn’s undefeated rubgy team
There they are, your undefeated Brooklyn Rugby men.

Here they are, your undefeated Brooklyn Rugby players.

Wait, Brooklyn has a rugby team?

Indeed, for the past two years, borough rugby fans have been testing their mettle against other rugby squads in New York, Long Island and upstate New York as part of Met Union, a tri-state area league.

This past Saturday, the 45-member team defeated the Rockland Rogues Rugby team a whopping 59-0 to end its season undefeated.

“It was a dominating performance, if I can say without sounding too full of ourselves,” said captain Daniel Newcombe, a Park Slope native who got into rugby during college.

Now, the team goes on to face Suffolk Rugby this Saturday at noon on Randall’s Island, Field 74.

“We beat them 29-0 in the regular season, but they are a good side that will presumably play harder in the post season,” said Newcombe.

If the team comes through the playoffs undefeated, it has a shot at the national tournament.

A bigger dream for the team would be a proper home team. They practice in Brooklyn at the Red Hook Recreational Fields but play “home” games on Randall’s Island because the borough lacks a proper rugby field.

“I’m hoping in the future a field materializes in Brooklyn, but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen in a very near future,” said Newcombe. “We prefer to be in Brooklyn.”
