Classified ads are intended to help people by facilitating communication and advertising available services; however, some of the hotlines & service numbers in classifieds actually hurt the people who rely on them by cheating them of their hard-earned dollars. “Most newspapers print a disclaimer in their classified ad section to warn readers about numbers that are a direct line to trouble. Any number starting with 900, 540, 595 or 871 charges a fee beyond a local call. In some instances, ads initially advertise calls to a local number, but then direct callers to a second number starting with one of the paid exchanges. “Consumers must also question the legitimacy of vague classifieds because they too could be a scam. Before responding to an ad, consumers should verify the source of all information & always be wary about sending money or signing a contract with an unknown party.” Office of the Public Advocate

Adele A Westbrook Adele Westbrook, 82 of New York City passed away peacefully on January 28, 2019. Adele was born on February 20, 1936 in Brooklyn New York, the first child of Adele McLaughlin Westbrook and Harold J. Westbrook, Sr. Adele attended Our Lady Help of Christians School and St. Brendan’s High School in Flatbush. Adele was a lifelong resident of New York where she pursued a robust literary career. She worked first at a major international advertising agency (Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osbourne) and then moved into book publishing (George Braziller Inc & Harry N. Abrams) where as senior editor her forte was developing the text and illustration material for a variety of art and other illustrated book subjects. Later in her career she also served as writer-in-residence for the Charleston School of Law. Throughout her literary career she collaborated with her husband, Oscar Ratti whom she me at Columbia University where Oscar was doing graduate work in Classical Languages and Adele was studying Philosophy. This collaboration led to the publication of a series of illustrated books on the practice of Aikido. These include: Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere (1970), Secrets of the Samurai (1973), The Castle in the Rain & the Judge (2001), Yamabushi and Homecoming (2002), Tales of the Hermit III (2004) as well as a translation of Tacuinum Sanitatis:The Medieval Health Handbook (1992). Adele was an accomplished practitioner of the Art of Aikido attaining “Shodan Rank”. She studied with Yasuo Ohara (the only instructor of Aikido on the east coast) whom she met at Columbia University (1961). Adele and husband Oscar were early supporters of the NY Aikikai dojo, which is still active today. In a condolence letter, Yoshimitus Yamada, President of the U.S. Aikido Federation and chief instructor at NY AIKIKAI remembers Adele and Oscar as instrumental to the founding and success of this historic dojo. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Oscar Ratti who passed away in 2005 and is survived by a devoted family of siblings, Joan Clarke of Richmond, VA, Harold Westbrook, Jr. of Arroyo Grande, CA, Charles Westbrook of Kinnelon, N.J., Edward Westbrook of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Richard Westbrook of New Hope, Pa, Marie Westbrook of Crozet, Va., and 6 nieces and 6 nephews. A private memorial service is planned for immediate family. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in her memory to East Cooper Community Outreach, 1145 Six Mile Road, Mount Pleasant SC 29466
