Raise a toast to research aimed at finding a cure for breast cancer, and help those afflicted by the disease.
Beginning May 2, and going through June 20, six wine shops in Brooklyn will be participating in the second annual Start Wine−ing, Stop Breast Cancer event, whose goal is to raise money for the Avon Foundation’s Breast Cancer Crusade.
On selected days, each of the shops will donate a percentage of sales of wines featured in a special tasting to the cause.
The participating stores are the Prospect Wine Shop, 322 Seventh Avenue (May 2, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.); Big Nose Full Body, 382 Seventh Avenue (May 16, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.); Fermented Grapes, 651 Vanderbilt Avenue (May 30, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.),; Slope Cellars, 436 Seventh Avenue (June 6, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.); SIP Fine Wine, 67 Fifth Avenue (June 13, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.); and Shawn Wine & Spirits, 141 Seventh Avenue (June 20, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
The fundraiser is the brainchild of Lenore Arons, who herself is a breast cancer survivor and has participated for the past several years in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
“Breast cancer is still a serious, uncured disease,” Arons stressed. “In these difficult economic times, more people find themselves without adequate insurance or without insurance, so it’s even more important to do what you can to contribute to the cause. There are those that suffer more because they are uninsured, and we have to be able to provide them with access to diagnosis, care and treatment. That’s what this event is all about.”
