Crime continues to decline in the 76th Precinct, the safest command in Brooklyn — and ranked third citywide.
“We’re definitely moving in the right direction,” said Captain Kenneth Corey, the commanding officer of the precinct.
The precinct tied its own record of lowest number of crimes ever reported in the precinct in a week — three — for the week ending May 31. The record was set the last week of March.
For the year so far, the precinct, which covers Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Boerum Hill, and Gowanus, has seen a 7.5 percent drop in crime in compared to last year, as of May 31.
For the last 28 days, crime in the precinct fell a whopping 33.3 percent, compared to the same period in 2008, according to the data.
And while crime declines, arrests are up 17 percent Corey said, a testament to the vigilance of his cops.
The biggest decline has been in robberies, which have dropped 23.7 percent compared to 2008, police statistics show.
In most of the seven major crime categories crime is on the decline from a year ago, the data shows. Grand larceny fell by 5.9 percent, assaults are down 18.5 percent, and car thefts have slid 8 percent, the statistics reveal.
Murders are flat, with three reported each year; there has been one rape reported so far, compared to none last year. Only burglaries are up, 11 percent, with 40 incidents reported in 2009, contrasted with 36 last year.
Corey said the precinct saw an uptick in burglaries in March and February. On one bad day he said, four apartments in an eight−family house on Fourth Place between Clinton and Court were victimized. An arrest has not yet been made in those cases, but since that time, the precinct “has arrested a few known burglars,” and the numbers have fallen, Corey noted.
