Food exchange: East Flatbush Key Food closing, reopening as Foodtown

Grocery games: An Albany Avenue Key Food in East Flatbush will close at the end of the month, and reopen as a Foodtown in April, according to the property’s manager.

An East Flatbush Key Food will shutter at the end of the month to make way for another chain grocer, the site’s property manager confirmed on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a Foodtown,” said Erwin Holzli.

The Albany Avenue supermarket — located between Farragut and Glenwood roads — will close its doors on Dec. 31 to make way for about three months’ worth of renovations, before it reopens with its new name in April, according to Holzli.

Workers will renovate the bakery, add new refrigerated display cases, and install new plumbing and gas pipes, according to a Dec. 21 permit Holzli filed with the city, which shows the makeover will cost more than $50,000.

In 2015, Key Food bigwigs set up shop inside the building after signing a three-year lease for the space following the bankruptcy of its former tenant A&P, according to Holzli and public records, the latter of which indicate Foodtown will have the space for 25 years, with the option to extend a lease for up to twenty years.
