When you write a book called “The Shameless Carnivore,” you had better serve something meatier than cheese and crackers at the launch party. So when Scott Gold celebrated the release of his book at the Brooklyn Brewery earlier this month, he served foie gras, duck and a variety of other specialty meats.
It seemed appropriate for a book that chronicles both the author’s life as a carnivore as well as the ethical and culinary debates about meat.
“As soon as I started writing about it,” Gold, a Greenpoint resident, told GO Brooklyn, “passion started pouring out of me. I never realized how strongly I felt about meat.”
Over the course of researching his 355 pages, Gold not only consulted with philosophers, scientists and butchers, but also went on his own journey, eating 31 different meats in a single month, devouring every part of a cow, and attending the 24th Annual Montana Testicle Festival.
Closer to home, Gold can be just as adventurous.
“Eating in Brooklyn, I love the Polish butcher shops. You can’t tell what [the foods] are unless you speak Polish,” he said, “but those sausages are fantastic, especially blood sausage, which you can’t find very often.”
No matter which way your tastes lean, “The Shameless Carnivore” is a rare chance to take a bite of a local author’s work so well done.
